Red Stevens owned everything a man could ask for, and he generously supported his entire extended family, asking nothing in return. Near the end of his life, however, Red realized one thing: in giving his family everything, he had given them nothing. Years of being provided with unearned incomes had caused them to become greedy and selfish. Yet there was one who wasn't completely lost. One who still had the potential to change and to learn. That one was Red's great-nephew, Jason. This is the story of Red Stevens, a self made man who realized, almost too late, the terrible mistake he had made. It is the story of Jason Stevens, as he makes a year long spiritual journey down a path that will lead to the incredible inheritance that his uncle has planned for him. And it is also our story, as we travel along with Jason, learning lessons in the most unexpected ways - lessons that we can learn and apply every day, making "The Ultimate Gift" our own.

I don't know why it took me so long to discover this story or the movie that followed, but it is not only a good read and a great lesson, but one that can be enjoyed on a multitude of levels. Would make a great Sunday School series or even Sermon Topics, but even better as an in home lesson or conversation starter with young adults.
The book would have been so much better if it was from Jason's viewpoint, or at least in the third person following Jason so we could actually see what he goes through. I saw the movie and loved it, so I sought out the book and bought it. I was very disappointed in this book. Instead the book came off as being preachy and sentimental, with Jason talking about how much he learned from each experience. I loved that the movie actually followed Jason around so we could see how he struggled through each of his "gifts." The book, however, is written in first person from Red Stevens' lawyers point of view. All the reader gets is Jason's report of what happened over the course of the month. Stovall has apparently not mastered the art of showing vs. telling, to me a big no-no in creative writing.
It is a amazing book and I could relate to some parts in the book.
This is an awewome story. Everyone should read this book. Great Life Lesson's.The movie was good too.
This is a story of the basics of life that adults need to teach kids, whom are moving into adulthood, things that for the most part are not being taught today by their parents or other adults. If you didn't grow up in a family that really showed you what counts, this will help show some of what you may be missing. If you grew up in a family that did show you what counts in life to make you a better person, it may make you remininsce.
